He Knows What It Takes To Turn Lives Around

As the director of Salvation Halfway House Ministries, Paul Carbone’s mission is to help people turn their lives around. SHHM provides a safe, sober living environment for all who need it, at affordable rates in a faith-based setting. Paul’s goal is to build more facilities in order to continue his mission.
Paul is essentially “paying it forward” because he’s lived a life filled with struggles. And he knows what it takes to turn someone’s life around. Because it happened to him.

Born in 1969, Paul suffered multiple birth defects including congenital cleft lip and palate and spinal meningitis. At the age of 15, he was diagnosed with a chemical brain imbalance, which doctors attributed to spinal meningitis.

In his late teens, Paul turned to marijuana and was in and out of county jail for minor offenses. But his problems worsened. Over the next fifteen years, Paul served several prison sentences in both Florida and Arizona.

Several years after leaving prison, Paul found himself in the polar opposite situation: he was making massive amounts of money owning a large car dealership. But with the money, Paul became addicted to drugs, particularly methamphetamine, and alcohol. He said, “At one point, meth took over my life.”

After serving more time in jail, Paul found the Phoenix Dream Center (phoenixdreamcenter.org). He stayed in the sober living facility for one year, attending a Christian-based discipleship program, and doing mission work in Nogales, Mexico.

Paul decided to return to Florida and ended up at the Fort Myers Rescue Mission, a Christian-based homeless shelter. He moved out on his own after one year, renting a house and working as a builder of motorized bicycles. He was getting his life back on track.

But soon, others were knocking on his door, asking for a place to stay. Paul offered safe, sober housing, in exchange for any rent and/or utilities the person could afford.

His landlord saw his efforts to help others – and offered her help, as well. “She asked me if I’d like to own a house. I told her I would, but simply couldn’t afford it.” His landlord funded his mortgage and all closing costs. Paul recalls her generosity as a “blessing from God”.

That “blessing from God” went on to sell him a second house, He immediately renovated it into a second sober living house.

What was Paul’s turning point?

“I was tired of the roller coaster ride of my life, from one extreme to another. The bibleship program changed my life because I learned what the Lord had in mind for me.”

With the help of donors and local food banks, Paul has plans to expand his program. There’s a sign in Paul’s house that speaks profoundly to his life: “You’ll Never Leave Where You Are Until You Decide Where You’d Rather Be.”

Paul has found his place in life, and he plans on helping as many people as possible find their place in life, too.
